He was born on 27 July 1972 in the village of Zarya Kommunizma in the Taldy-Kurgan region of the Kazakh SSR.
From 2 to 12 September 2015, he performed a spaceflight as Flight Engineer-2 of the Soyuz TMA-18M transport crew spacecraft (TPC) (a 10-day expedition to visit the ISS). In July, Aimbetov's crew status was changed to Flight Engineer-2 in accordance with his qualifications. He returned to Earth aboard the Soyuz TMA-16M spacecraft.
Aidyn Aimbetov was the first cosmonaut from independent Kazakhstan and the third Kazakh to go into space.
