Born on 11 March 1963 in Bauru, Brazil.
On 2 September 2005, Brazil and Russia signed an agreement on scientific and technological cooperation, including space exploration. This agreement opened the door for Pontis to go into space. As a flight engineer on the Soyuz TMA-8 spacecraft, Pontis was trained at Star City.
The launch of the Soyuz TMA-8 spacecraft took place on 30 March 2006 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The flight lasted 9 days 21 hours 17 minutes. During the flight it docked with the International Space Station. Pontis blasted off with Pavel Vinogradov and Jeffrey Williams, who were part of the 11th main expedition to the ISS and returned to Earth in the cockpit of the Soyuz TMA-7 spacecraft with William MacArthur and Valery Tokarev, who were part of the 12th long-duration expedition.
He was the first Brazilian astronaut to successfully fly with Russian cosmonauts on the ISS.
