He was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala, Punjab (Indian Union, since 1950 and now the Republic of India).
On 11 September 1982, after a rigorous selection process, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma was selected as one of two candidates for the Soviet-Indian space mission. In October of the following year, he became a member of the main crew of the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft.
From 3 to 11 April 1984, he performed a cosmonaut-researcher flight as a member of the international crew together with the crew commander Y.V. Malyshev and the flight engineer G.M. Strekalov on the spacecraft Soyuz T-11 and the orbital research complex: Salyut-7 OS - spacecraft Soyuz T-10.
On 5 April 1984, the spacecraft Soyuz T-11 docked with the orbital complex where the crew of the 3rd main expedition was working (commander L.D. Kizim, flight engineer V.A. Solovjov, cosmonaut-researcher O.Y. Atkov).
After completion of the flight programme, the Soviet-Indian crew of the Soyuz T-10 returned to Earth. The flight lasted 7 days, 21 hours and 40 seconds.
Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (11.04.1984), awarded with the Medal of the Ministry of Defence of Russia "For Strengthening the Combat Community" (2007), Medal "For Merits in Space Exploration" (12.04.2011).
