Born on 24 August 1964 in the city of Uzgen, Osh oblast, Kyrgyz SSR. His nationality is Uzbek.
Salizhan Sharipov made his first spaceflight in 1998 as a flight specialist on the shuttle mission Endeavour STS-89 to dock with the Mir space station. For his participation in the expedition, Sharipov was awarded the highest honours of both Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan - the Order of Am Shumkar, along with the title "Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic", and the Uzbek Order of Outstanding Merit.
During his second flight, he was commander of the Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft and also served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station. He also performed two spacewalks during the flight, spending a total of 10 hours in space. The flight lasted from 14 October 2004 to 25 April 2005 - more than 192 days. Following the flight, Sharipov was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
