Born on 27 July 1946 in the village of the collective farm named after 1 May, Karkarala district, Karaganda region. Kazakh SSR.
Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor.
For courage and heroism displayed during the testing of new aviation equipment, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 31 October 1988 he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal.
From 2 to 10 October 1991 he was cosmonaut-researcher of the visiting expedition to the OK "Mir" under the Kazakh programme. Launched on Soyuz TM-13 with Alexander Volkov and Franz Fiböck (Austria), landing on Soyuz TM-12 with Anatoly Artsebarsky and Franz Fiböck (Austria). Call sign: "Donbass-2" (at launch)/"Ozon-2" (at landing). The flight lasted 7 days 22 hours 12 minutes and 40 seconds.
He was awarded the Order of the October Revolution for his only flight into space.
